Important Notice.

Reminder for school pickup today. Large funeral  in Church this afternoon. Parking expected to be an issue. Students who are usually picked up at Church Carpark gate will wait for parents to collect them from outside School Office. There is a little alleyway from Carnot Street to Lightheart Street (a tiny cul-de-sac off Grey Street)  - so might be a good idea to park on Grey Street and walk through to collect students.

Matariki
Matariki is a group of stars that show in our night sky at this time of the year - they signal the start of the new year. Matariki means 'eyes of God'. It's a time to celebrate the beautiful Maori culture and heritage. It's also a great reminder that we are all responsible for keeping this culture alive in our kiwi kids. We will be adding a few words and phrases to our te reo repertoire this week. We'll put them on the blog so that you can learn with us.

Cultural dinner
This is a really great night out (for real - not teacher spin). Bring a plate, bring your smile and have a good time. The Pasifika group have been preparing an item for this night - ALL of our girls are in the Pasifika group this year so it will be great to see you all there.

Young Vinnies
The Young Vinnies are collecting non perishable food and good unwanted clothing to help the homeless.  Each item donated will be worth 1 house point.  The class that collects the most house points overall will have a mufti day just for their class!
Mrs Todd

Junior Cross Country
You will need to bring: PE gear, drink bottle, running shoes (to keep your feet warm) and a warm jacket. Parents, Grandparents and friends are most welcome to come and cheer us on. It's pretty quick - we usually get through all 200 kids in about an hour.

Make 10

Make 10 is a really handy strategy.  Some of our maths groups have been learning how to use the make 10 strategy.  Knowing ways to make ten and all of our 10+ facts are really handy.

Sustainability - Taonga.    Am I a guardian of God's Creation?
We have been talking about Sustainability - Our NZ Taonga.  As part of this learning, we have looked at the damage that pests do and have been learning a bit about endemic/native plants and animals.  The kids are hooked!  I have had to stop the making of possum traps (we were doing more damage to the gardens than the possums would), they launch in to books about NZ birds, animals and plants and I have people excitedly telling me how many squashed possums they counted on the roads...   If you know anything about possum trapping, pest control, wilding pine eradication, caring for native birds, or just have some great stories or facts about our NZ Taonga, we would love to hear from you. You can share by coming in to talk, making a video, writing your story on paper or by emailing me.

The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, says, Jesus has loved us all with a human heart. For this reason, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced by our sins and for our salvation, is quite rightly considered the chief sign and symbol of that love. (No.478).  Throughout the Gospel, we see the outpouring of Jesus’ love, whether in miracle stories, stories of forgiveness, or the compassion for the grieving.           “Therefore, love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your strength. “    Deuteronomy 6:5-6

Principal for the Day                                                                                                                                Jade Moller was the lucky winner of the gala competition this year.  She finally gets her chance to take charge this week.  I'm sure Jade will be amazing as Principal - she was in Room 5 last year after all, and we all know that Room 5 people are the best!

Monet Writing

Last week we were doing a really interesting RE lesson - that got off track when we started to talk about the value of art.  We were really interested so Mrs T decided that we should dig a little deeper.

On Monday, we did some research. We watched some videos and read some facts about Monet and his art.  We learned how to take quick notes - don't worry about spelling, full-stops, or sentences.

On Tuesday, we went back to our notes and had to choose the 6 most important facts about Monet. We put these notes into a plan for our writing.

On Wednesday, We got to work and turned our notes into a story. We had to write proper sentences and make sure that our ideas were in order.

On Thursday, we got out the paint and made our own Waterlilies painting - just like Monet.
Come on in and have a look. We are rather pleased with our efforts.

Mrs T is also really impressed with the way we share our ideas and work together.
Little Learning Legends!

Reading

This week our Purple/Gold Readers have been working on vocabulary.  There were some really interesting words in our books this week. We sounded them out and sounded confident BUT...
Mrs T busted us. We didn't really know what they meant.

Then Mrs T showed us how to use the big dictionaries to look up word meanings. We are hooked on dictionaries. We have learned about nouns and verbs, alphabetical order... Fabulous learning team!

School Photos
We have photos this week. The deadline for ordering photos is Thursday at 12:30pm. After this time you will need to place your order directly with Photolife.

Reading Eggs and Rugby
We have a trophy cabinet full of awesome rugby and Rugger prizes. To be in the draw for these prizes children must complete an hour of Reading Eggs each week (that's about 3 lessons). Reading Eggs is really fantastic and I encourage you to use this tool at home, too. The draw will take place just before the Lions 3rd Test.

FRIDAY 9TH JUNE.
9.30 am Junior Kapa Haka
11.00 am Pasifika Practice

2.05 pm Assembly. Room 7

Last week we all went to Pasifika group - since 11 of our 24 kids are involved, I thought we might all go for a look. We rocked it! Some of the more hesitant amongst us showed some real talent. We might have some new recruits.

Whaea Eliana has started a Kapa Haka group for Juniors who are a little intimidated by the big kids group (but any Year 2s who are interested can choose whichever group they like). We'll discuss it on Friday and see how many keen beans we have.

It's luck that Friday has a light work load that can be juggled. Too many talented kids in Room 5.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take a minute or two to comment on our learning posts.
The kids get a real buzz out of sharing their learning online and to get a positive comment from someone out there in the big wide world is the icing on the cake. Thanks.

Friday 2 June 2017

Hello????? Is anybody there?????

We all put lots of work into our blog and we love telling you all what we are up to in Room 5.  But we don't have any comments.

Is anybody out there?
Is anybody reading our blog?
We'd love to hear from you.  Just click on 'comment' and leave us a message about our awesome class and our awesome work - and our awesome teacher.

We read a book called Too Many Possums. Did you know that there are about 8 possums for every person in NZ? They are killing our taonga - native plants, birds and other animals. We decided to make possum traps.
