Last week of term 3 - Wow! That went fast.

It will be a bit strange flying solo this week but Im pretty sure I can remember how to teach a class by myself. There is usually plenty of advice from the floor anyhow, hehehe. Whaea Kata enjoyed her time with us so much that she has asked to help out in her free time - so it isn't goodbye for long.

This week I have promised that we will learn a little bit about Vincent Van Gogh. Since we have some calendar art to complete this week it's quite good timing. We'll keep you all up-to-date and will display our masterpieces on our blog once they are completed to our very high standards.

Van Gogh had a few problems with mental health and it's a little difficult to avoid the discussion. This will of course be at a 6-7 year olds level, however. We will be talking about how we can be a good friend and what to do when we feel sad, angry, lonely... This is also good timing as we are all a little bit tired and scratchy at the moment.

Have a great week!

Ten is an awesome number.

We are learning how to use the Make Ten strategy in maths.  It is REALLY handy to know the number bonds for ten.  It makes our maths much, much easier.

Whaea Kata
It's the last week of Whaea Kata's teaching practicum.  She has done really well and the kids and I have loved having her in our class.  She is very patient and very nice and will be missed.  We hope you keep in touch and come and visit us Whaea. You are one of our Room 5 team now.

School Disco
Always a fun night out.  Put your dancing shoes on and get involved - your kids would love to have a dance with you.

Please Bring
A couple of bottle tops - milk bottle tops are great. Whaea Kata has big plans for her last week.

Please bring...

This is Whaea Kata's last week with us (poor Mrs T) but, before she goes, she has a few more awesome lessons to teach.  Can you please bring an empty plastic drink bottle or a clean tin can? You'll see what it's for on Monday.  It's going to be a fun week!

Storm Chasers

We watched a video of Hurricane Irma - wow!

It was pretty clear that the kids in Room 5 are way more sensible than the people in this video.  There was a lot of muttering and "What an idiot!" "He should go inside" "That's dangerous"...

Then we started to wonder...
Why do big storms have names? Who names them?

We found a kiwi kids news article that told us everything that we needed to know.

Why do storms have names?

September 12, 2017
Huge storms are often in the news but have you ever wondered why they have names and how they are decided?
Why do they need names?
Tropical storms like hurricanes, cyclones or typhoons are given names so scientists can keep track of them.
In some places there can be over 100 storms in just 12 months, so names make them much easier for experts to tell them apart.
Who makes the name decisions?
There are regular meetings of weather scientists around the world to decide on new names for the next year.
Names of storms which cause a lot of damage are never used again.
Storms are named in alphabetical order.
The first storm of a year will have an A name, like Hurricane Alice or Typhoon Andrew, the next one gets a B name and so on.
There is a name for each letter of the alphabet – but Q, U, X, Y and Z are not included.
Who decides if they’re named after girls or boys?
Storms take it in turns to have girls’ or boys’ names.
Originally storms were only named after girls. In 1979, men’s names were introduced.

Engineering

Today, Chloe, James and Abigail built a tower using rulers and berrocca tins (that we use for maths). Vaughn, Cooper, Zara and Brydin thought it was a great idea so they got glue sticks to add on. After some discussion it was decided that their building was an airport with a bridge to the carpark building.  Very impressive!

Super "e"!!!!!!!!! hip children's song by Mark D Pencil. Video by Harry ...

We have been learning about Super 'e'.  What a clever letter.

Nativity of Mary Mass

Today we celebrated the birthday of Mary with a lovely Mass.
Father Eamon had lots of questions for us and Room 5 knew
all of the answers. Maybe he will ask us for the answer one day.
Michelle went up on the altar to read a Prayer of the Faithful.
She was awesome. Clear, confident voice and so sensible.
James, Cooper and Rhys took up the offertory.
There were a few nerves but they rocked it.
Well done, team.  You are super cool!!!!

ICT and the key competencies

We have an old computer in our class.  Today the boys decided to fix it - apparently if your Dad, Aunty, cousin or friend is an electrician you can do this.

We printed off some labelled photos to find out what the parts were and we found videos explaining how a computer works.  There was some fantastic conversation about the different bits and wires. Mrs T isn't too keen to plug it in so we aren't too sure if it's fixed, yet.

There isn't a lot of working space around a computer so there was plenty of 'negotiation' so that we could all get inside and have go.

Help!

There is a school disco coming up on the 21st September and the PTA need some help.

They are asking if any parents from the junior school would be able to offer a little time/help.

Could you please email Linda Fox on    lyndamfox@gmail.com if you can help.

I am sure that there will be plenty of offers from the amazing Room 5 team.
